[HK] Beware of Phishing Scams in Hong Kong

Recent phishing scams have been reported in Hong Kong SAR, involving fraudsters posing as WeChat/Weixin customer service representatives. These scammers use fake phone calls, FaceTime, and phishing SMS messages that spoof WeChat's verification code SenderID.

Common tactics include:

  • "Million Dollar Guarantee": Scammers may try to convince users to pay for services that are actually free.
  • False Payment Claims: They might claim that users have activated certain payment services, which incur monthly fees unless canceled, or that a service is about to expire and requires immediate payment to avoid affecting credit ratings.

To protect yourself from these scams, keep the following tips in mind:

🔎🔎🔎 Remember:

  • Do not click on unknown links or open suspicious messages.
  • WeChat customer service will only contact you after you’ve initiated a request through the WeChat app, in person, or via help.wechat.com.
