Terrorism, Violent Extremism and Other Criminal Behaviour

WeChat prohibits any content or behaviour that amounts to criminal behaviour. This includes any content or conduct that may constitute a genuine risk or harm or direct threat to public safety, or any content or conduct that breaches any applicable laws or regulations.

Terrorism and harmful activities

WeChat takes a very strict stance against terrorism and violent extremism. We do not allow dangerous individuals or organizations to use the WeChat platform to promote terrorism, violent extremism, crime, or other types of harmful activities. Terrorism refers to the use of political violence and the exploitation of fear aimed at reaching at a target audience, with the end goal of bringing behavioural and societal change through coercion, whether that be to further a religious, political or any other ideological cause. Violent extremism is a form of extremism that condones and enacts violence with ideological or deliberate intent, such as religious or political violence. Violent extremist views can manifest in connection with a range of issues, including politics, religion and gender relations. Extremism is a term used to characterize a variety of attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors that often are on the extreme end of the political, religious, or ideological spectrum within society (e.g., white nationalist, anarchist).
If we believe there is a threat to the safety of the WeChat platform or your safety, we may suspend or terminate such users’ accounts and notify the relevant legal authorities. As such, content which constitute statements, calls to action and advocacy for the following are prohibited on the WeChat platform:

a) terrorist activity and terrorist organizations;
b) organized hate;
c) mass or serial murder;
d) human trafficking; and
e) organized violence, riots, or criminal activity.

Sale or transfer of protected wild animals

You may not upload, share, publish, transmit, stream or otherwise make available on or through the WeChat platform any content that:

a) Attempts to buy, sell, trade, donate, or gift, or asks for, protected wild animals/endangered species or their parts;
b) Admits to poaching, buying, or trading of endangered species or their parts by the poster of the content themselves or through others;
c) Depicts poaching of endangered species and their parts committed by the poster of the content themselves or through others; or
d) Promotes, encourages, coordinates, or provides instructions to use or make products from endangered species or their parts.

Sale or transfer of restricted goods or services

You may not upload, share, publish, transmit, stream or otherwise make available on or through the WeChat platform any content that:

a) Depicts, promotes, or trades firearms, firearm parts, ammunition, explosives, or lethal enhancements; or
b) Provides access to manufacturing instructions for firearms, firearm parts, ammunition, explosives, or lethal enhancements.
c) Attempts to buy, sell, trade, donate, or gift alcohol or tobacco products between private individuals, and is not posted by a page, group, or social media profile representing a real brick and mortar store, legitimate website, or brand;
d) Attempts to buy, sell, trade, donate, gift, or solicit recreational drugs;
e) Admits to buying or trading recreational drugs by the poster of the content themselves or through others;
f) Admits to personal use without acknowledgment of or reference to recovery, treatment, or other assistance to combat usage of recreational drugs;
g) Promotes, encourages, coordinates, or provides instructions for the use or making of recreational drugs;
h) Attempts to buy, sell, trade, donate, or gift sex toys and sexual enhancement products, weight loss products, or potentially dangerous cosmetic procedures;
i) Attempts to buy, sell, or trade driving-related violations, for example, services offering to handle the driving-related violations on behalf of the errant driver or trading in license points;
j) Attempts to buy, sell, or trade dark web products, for example, leaked data, cybercrime know-how, and tutorials; or
k) Attempts to buy, sell, or trade restricted goods and services generally, including but not limited to human organs and body parts, human blood, counterfeit currency, historical artifacts, and hazardous goods and materials.

Human exploitation

You may not, nor may you permit any other person to upload, share, publish, transmit, stream or otherwise make available on or through the WeChat platform any content that may lead to human exploitation, including but not limited to:

a) Sex trafficking, covering minors and adults;
b) Human trafficking and smuggling;
c) Sales of children or illegal adoption;
d) Orphanage trafficking and orphanage voluntourism;
e) Forced marriages;
f) Arranged marriages with refugees or internally displaced persons;
g) Labour exploitation (including bonded labour);
h) Domestic servitude;
i) Non-regenerative organ trafficking;
j) Forced criminal activity (e.g., forced begging, forced drug trafficking); and
k) Recruitment of child soldiers.

Other criminal behaviour

You may not upload, share, publish, transmit, stream or otherwise make available on or through the WeChat platform any content that contains any information which may violate any applicable law, regulation, ordinance or rule (e.g. extremist information).
Any content that promotes or provokes any individual to commit any crime is prohibited, including but not limited to:

a) theft;
b) fraud;
c) sexual assault and sexual violence;
d) vandalism or property damage; and
e) physical harm against individuals or group of people.
